Plaques In The Throat, Causes, And Remedies

The formation of plaques in the throat is often a symptom of various types of infections that cause weakness, difficulty swallowing, and sometimes pain.

Plaques In The Throat, What Are They

Throat plaques appear as yellowish-white lumps and can be found in the back of the throat, on the tonsils, soft palate, or uvula. Their presence denotes ongoing infectious processes involving the mucous membranes of the oral cavity.

Plaques are the clinical observation of various ailments, such as difficulty swallowing, sore throat, swollen tonsils, fever, and swollen lymph nodes in the neck. Sometimes they present as red plaques in the throat with no pain, just an itchy sensation: they can be manifestations of stress, with the need to swallow or cough repeatedly. They are usually plaques without fever as a symptom.

Plaques In The Throat Cause

Plaques in the throat are generally the result of bacterial, viral, or fungal infections that cause typical ailments involving the throat, such as tonsillitis, pharyngitis, colds, and flu.

  1. Bacterial causes of plaques in the throat: Streptococcus and Staphylococcus aureus, syphilis, chlamydia, and gonorrhea can be the bacteria causing their presence.
  2. Viral causes of plaques in the throat: Rhinovirus. Responsible for most cases of cold, Adenovirus, cause of colds, tonsillitis, pharyngitis, pneumonia, coronavirus, and flu viruses; they are all classically accountable for colds, tonsillitis, pharyngitis, and gastrointestinal disorders; the Epstein-Barr virus, of the herpes virus family, is the main culprit of infectious mononucleosis and causes some types of lymphoma and epithelial tumors. Even HIV, which reduces the immune system, can cause plaque formation in the throat.
  3. Fungal causes of plaques in the throat: Candida albicans, with the formation of the typical “thrush” in the mouth and throat.

Plaques In The Throat And Tonsils

In some cases, plaques in the throat are associated with tonsillitis, inflammation of the palatine tonsils, manifest enlargement of the same, difficulty swallowing, and fever. They are typical in children, and often in the past, if they recurred, the removal of the tonsils was chosen, considered a vehicle of infection.

Manuka honey is a valuable remedy in case of throat plaques and tonsillitis due to its disinfectant properties and ease of administration to children. What tests to carry out in case of plaques in the throat? The doctor, who will have evaluated an inspection of the part, will be able to perform a throat swab to ascertain whether it is a bacterial infection. Blood tests, in particular with the request for evaluation of the blood count with leukocyte form, evaluate the presence of an inflammatory state.
